We have adipose tissue all over the body. This tissue is made of adipocytes (fat cells) to store body energy in the form of fat. When adipose tissue increases, a person generally gains weight by increasing food consumption, becoming physically inactive, or both. The aging process has an inevitable impact on a person’s body shape. The tendency to decrease physical activity in mid-life contributes to weight gain. In addition, weight gain will tend to be concentrated more in the lower body–the lower abdomen, hips, buttocks and thighs.
There are generally two types of fat storage, visceral fat which surrounds the internal organs; and subcutaneous fat which is the fatty tissue beneath the skin and it contributes to 80% of body fat. Body fat distribution differs from person to person. There is considerable research showing that fat distribution varies between men and women. For women, fat usually deposit around the abdomen, buttocks and thighs. While for men the fat deposits are generally located around the abdomen.
Excess skin is also an issue and is most commonly attributed to the natural aging process, especially when there is rapid expansion of the abdomen during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, or rapid weight gain & loss. Excess skin can further affect the body shape and figure.
The dangers of excess weight and belly fat not only distorts your figure but also puts your health at risk. Having an ideal body weight can be an important factor in your health. The ultimate goal of weight loss should be decrease in calories and increase in muscle mass. Exercise and healthy dieting is best performed together to lose weight. Exercise seems to result in more subcutaneous fat loss. Diet alone results in more visceral fat loss, but not necessarily have any radical change in appearance. For stubborn fat areas, that is not nearly as simple as just slashing calories and dieting. The term “stubborn fat” is often used to describe fat found around the belly and chest areas for men and around the belly, hips, buttocks and thighs for women. Some believe that you can lose body fat by vigorously exercising a specific body part, which is called “spot reduction.” But research has concluded that vigorously exercising a specific body part will not have any influence on local fat in that area. That is, simply doing lots of crunches do not decrease the amount or size of belly fat.
