Eyebags & Tear Tough

Eyebags are a distinct sign of aging starting from the mid-30s. They are typically defined as a bulging or sagging of skin under the lower eyelids. At a young age the eyelids and the skin around the eyes have adequate skin thickness and elasticity which give us a smooth contour. Over time, the skin’s thickness and elasticity decreases, the tissues around your eyes, including some of the muscles supporting your eyelids, weaken. This may cause the fat which normally help support the eyes to be seen around the lower eyelids, causing the lids to appear puffy and the appearance of eye bags. Depending on exactly how the skin is behaving, the appearance of eyebags can be classified into bulging of the under eyelids muscle or/and protrusion of under eyelids fatty tissue.

Bulging of the Under Eyelids Muscles:

The under eyelid muscles are reponsible for the opening and closing of the eyes, it is located just below the lower eyelashes. Under eyelid muscles can be pronounced and form a bulge just beneath the lower eyelashes, especially when we smile, which causes the area under the eye to bunch up, resulting in a puffy appearance. This trait maybe genetic or can be due to the thickening of the lid muscles as the result of constant blinking exercises over time. Another cause maybe due to the dradual decrease in skin thickness below the eyes as we age, the lid muscles would become relaxed and look like eye bags. the annoying dark circles under the eyes.

Tear Trough and Protrusion of under eyelids fatty tissues

With advancing age, the eyelids and the skin beneath the eye become very thin, the fat which cushions our eyeballs start to protrude outwards; giving rise to fat-containing eye-bags. Clinically we can define eye bags that are caused by tear trough deformity or fatty tissue protrusion. When we age, the suppleness of the skin decreases, a loss of volume in the area below the eyes make the grooves of the tear trough – the demarcating circular line that outlines the under eye area – can become deeper and more prominent. Over time, as the fat under the eye begins to protrude with age , this can also exacerbate the tear troughs, as the groove is made relatively deeper by the protrusion of fat above it. The transition from the eyes to the cheeks becomes interrupted by the formation of eye bags and tear troughs. In certain people, due to excess laxity of skin and fat around the eyes, the fatty deposits can further escape from the membrane that normally contain them, the fat slips out and occupies new spaces under the skin, resulting in a big pouch of fatty tissues under the eyelids, which makes one look constantly tired.

Aside from aging, other behaviors that appear to affect puffiness are obesity, fatigue, salty food diet and rubbing the eyes because of allergies. Bags under eyes are usually a cosmetic concern and rarely a sign of a serious underlying medical condition.

How to Solve the Problem of Eye Bags?

There are several ways to address the problem of under-eye bags. For mild cases, improving lifestyle habits, maintaining good sleep quality, reducing stress appropriately, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and maintaining a balanced nutritional intake can all help improve symptoms. Additionally, using eye creams or eye masks can help maintain moisture and elasticity in the skin around the eyes.

For more severe cases of under-eye bags, the following professional treatment methods can be considered.

💡Botox can be injected to relaxing the muscles and temporarily “remove” this “eyebag”

💡Dermal Filler injections to improve the tear tough deformity, by filling in the tear trough undermeath it, the eyebags can appear less prominent, this making the transition from the eyes to the cheeks smoother

💡Collagen Stimulator (Sculptra PLLA or Ellanse) for improving the eye and the cheeks contour

💡Minimal invasive surgery to removal lower eyebags

💡Lower blepharoplasty for permanent removal of the existing fatty tissues below the eyes.
